YFC in South Africa in its early years was born out of a middle class white ministry to high school aged young people with a special emphasis on the unchurched young people. YFC also provided a valuable service to predominantly suburban churches through training, rallies and camping.
In the last 2 decades, we have struggled to ensure that relevant ministry took place within a very turbulent socio-political arena, which has led to an evolving series of methodologies. This has resulted in our Purpose Statement now reflecting our strong emphasis on disadvantaged young people in the context of the community that they come from, and our emphasis in facilitating growth and development in all four areas (mental, physical, spiritual, social) of the young person’s life.
